The Civil Wars - Poison and Wine

The Civil Wars is an indie folk duo composed of CCM vocalist Joy Williams and guitarist/songwriter John Paul White.

This song is the title track of their first EP. It was released as the pair's first single on November 4, 2009.

It is the only song on the longplayer that Williams and White wrote with an outside collaborator - their friend Nashville songwriter Chris Lindsey.

The song is a thematic declaration of intent for The Civil Wars, encapsulating everything suggested in the duo's name when it comes to exploring the conflicts that arise as part of being a married couple. "That song probably does sum us up—The Civil Wars, the name of the band—as well as any song that we've written," said White.

"We're all married, and we were all talking about the good, the bad and the ugly, and just felt like: What would you say to someone if you were actually brutally honest—the things that you could never say because it would turn them away or let the cat out of the bag or reveal yourself to be weaker? What would you actually say if you had this invisible curtain around you and could just scream it in somebody's face and they'd actually never hear it? We were all being very painfully honest, because we're all very comfortable around each other and know that things like that never leave the room, except in a song. I'm pretty proud of that song, to be honest."

This came to many people's attention when it was heard prominently on the "New History" episode of Grey's Anatomy over a key climactic montage.

Other TV shows that its featured in include 90210 and The Vampire Diaries as well as the soundtrack to the movie Something Borrowed.

The song gained a wholly unsolicited endorsement when fellow Nashvillian Taylor Swift included it as a selection in her official iTunes playlist, tweeting, "I think this is my favorite duet. It's exquisite." The Civil Wars later teamed up with Swift to record "Safe and Sound" for the soundtrack of the movie, The Hunger Games.

White explained the song's meaning to UK newspaper, The Sun: "That song has parallels to our band and our band name," he said. "It's about all those battles you have with your spouse though it could be about addiction or even about your job. It was therapeutic to write.

We asked each other 'What would you scream at your partner - without them hearing or without any of the fallout — if you needed to get something off your chest? And that's how we wrote that song. We love to write in a way that is inclusive."

Randy Rogers Band - One More Sad Song

The Randy Rogers Band is an American Texas Country group from the state of Texas. The band is composed of Randy Rogers (lead vocals), Geoffrey Hill (guitar), Jon Richardson (bass guitar), Brady Black (fiddle), and Les Lawless (drums).

They have recorded four studio albums and two live albums, and have charted seven singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts.

Randy Rogers was born in Cleburne, Texas. At the age of 6 years, he learned to play the piano from his grandmother, and later started playing the guitar.

The Randy Rogers Band recorded its debut album, Live at Cheatham Street Warehouse, at a music hall of the same name in San Marcos, Texas.

By 2002, the band was signed to the independent Downtime record label, on which they released the album Like It Used to Be

It was around this time that the band began performing outside of San Marcos, primarily at Nutty Brown Cafe and Amphitheatre in nearby Dripping Springs, Texas.

Two years later, the album Rollercoaster was released, producing two minor entries on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts in early 2005.

Rogers also co-wrote "Somebody Take Me Home", a song recorded by Kenny Chesney, on his 2005 album, The Road and the Radio. Several of the songs on Rollercoaster were co-written by Radney Foster, who also co-produced the album.

Just a Matter of Time, the band's first major-label album, was released on Mercury Nashville Records in 2006.

The band also released their self-titled album on September 23, 2008, also on Mercury Nashville Records. The first single "In My Arms Instead", was released in August.

The band's fifth album, Burning the Day, was released on August 24, 2010 on MCA Nashville. The album's first single was "Too Late for Goodbye." It debuted at 55 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and after four weeks on the chart, it peaked at 47.

"One More Sad Song" was released in late 2012.

The song became the band's first Billboard Top 40 hit, and the first single from their sixth album, Trouble.

Patti LaBelle - On My Own ft. Michael McDonald

The Number One hit from LaBelle's 1986 platinum album, Winner in You, this is a song about being alone, together.

In the video, LaBelle and McDonald appear on separate coasts, in a split screen, and testify to the sweet sorrow of being solo after love ends.

This was written by Carole Bayer Sager and Burt Bacharach, who were married at the time. They promised the song to Patti LaBelle, but LaBelle's producer Richard Perry was less than impressed, and agreed to let Sager and Bacharach produce it instead. They cut their own backing track, which Patti LaBelle recorded on her own (pun unintended) but it wasn't until Michael McDonald was persuaded to contribute that the song came together.

The duo recorded their parts separately. Patti LaBelle filmed the video in New York and recorded her part in Philadelphia. Michael McDonald did both in LA.

Patti LaBelle was formerly in the R&B vocal group Labelle who scored an American #1 in 1975 with "Lady Marmalade." McDonald was part of the successful '70s west coast rock group The Doobie Brothers, whose biggest hit was the #1 smash "What A Fool Believes."

Labelle told NME in 1986: "The success of 'On My Own' came as a shock. I don't record for commercial value. With 'On My Own' I went into the Studio thinking, I'm gonna record something I love. Usually if I love it, it bubbles under. And I was surprised it made a hit."

Kings of Leon - Last Mile Home

Kings of Leon have stripped down "Last Mile Home," a song originally from the deluxe version of their latest album, Mechanical Bull, but written for the soundtrack of the new film August: Osage County. The lilting, soulful acoustic rendition of the tune will be found on the movie soundtrack when it is released on January 7th.

"It was a story we could all easily relate to," Caleb Followill, Kings of Leon's lead singer and songwriter tells Rolling Stone of the film. "The dynamic between family is always something that you look forward to, and dread at the same time. Not only are we family, but we all have very strong Oklahoma ties, so we totally relate to that 'frontier grit.'"

Writing for the movie was the first time the rockers tackled a project that wasn't specifically related to one of their albums. "It was important for us to create a song to complement such a beautiful film," Followill says. "We submitted the song, then went out on the road, then had to find a few days to record between tours. It was a tight squeeze but we made it happen."

Radney Foster - Nobody wins

"Nobody Wins" is a song recorded by American country music musician Radney Foster, cowritten by himself and Kim Richey.

It was released in January 1993 as the second single from his debut album Del Rio, TX 1959.

The song is the highest-peaking single of his career, spending twenty weeks on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts and peaking at number 2.

Radney Foster said: “I wrote this song with my friend Kim Richey, on her back porch on a beautiful sunny spring day. I drove up a little late because my wife and I had had a big fight the night before, and I’d gotten very little sleep. When I confessed my excuse, Kim said that she and her boyfriend had a fight the night before as well. I said, “It’s awful. Nobody ever wins in that deal.” And she said, “’Nobody Wins’ is a song title.” And I said, “Well, that’s what we’re writing today.

This was one of the easiest tracks to nail when we recorded, because everyone in the band really knew the song. I had sent them all the songs in advance, but once we got there most everyone confessed they either knew the song as a kid or played it in cover bands. It all fell right into place.”

Eddie Cantor- Makin' Whoopee

"Makin' Whoopee!" is a jazz/blues song, first popularized by Eddie Cantor in the 1928 musical Whoopee!. Gus Kahn wrote the lyrics and Walter Donaldson composed the music for the song as well as for the entire musical.

The title is a euphemism for sexual intimacy, and the song itself has been called a "dire warning", largely to men, about the "trap" of marriage.

"Makin' Whoopee" begins with the celebration of a wedding, honeymoon and marital bliss, but moves on to babies and responsibilities, and ultimately on to affairs and possible divorce, ending with a judge's advice.

Bing Crosby recorded the song already in 1928 with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra.

This song is about a guy going out with a girl who is just crazy. She pulled him from his normal life and made him revolve his life around hers, and it was almost like he was not on earth, he was just flying around with her. Now he realizes that he was not the crazy one and he's ready to come back or "land," and he's asking his friend to pick him up from the crazy life he was living because he's ready to leave that life behind.

Ben Folds told MTV news that this song was inspired by a close friend who got divorced. Said Folds: "He went through a really, really rough time with his horrible witch of a wife and then he got out of it. 'Landing' just refers to his flight back to his hometown and so him coming back to being himself."

Typical for Folds, this song sold a lot of internet downloads but got very little airplay.

ABBA - Knowing Me, Knowing You

"Knowing Me, Knowing You" is a hit single recorded by Swedish pop group ABBA.

The song was written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson, with the lead vocal sung by Anni-Frid Lyngstad.

"Knowing Me, Knowing You" was recorded in 1976 at the Metronome studio in Stockholm and was released as a single in February 1977, becoming one of the group's most successful hits. The B-side was "Happy Hawaii", an arrangement of another ABBA song, "Why Did It Have to Be Me?", but with a different lead vocalist and lyrics. "Knowing Me, Knowing You" was one of the first ABBA songs to deal with the break-up of a relationship, though with an upbeat quality to the music. It predates the divorces of the ABBA members, as well as further break-up songs to come: "The Winner Takes It All", "One of Us" and "When All Is Said and Done".

Group member Benny Andersson named "Knowing Me, Knowing You" as one of ABBA's best recordings in a 2004 interview, along with "Dancing Queen", "The Winner Takes It All" and "When I Kissed the Teacher".

Bjorn Ulvaeus of ABBA came up with this song at a time when the relationships within the group were strained, and his lyric reflect that.

Said Ulvaeus: "I think I wrote 'Knowing Me Knowing You' before the divorce. In many ways, Agnetha and my divorce was an amicable one, we just grew apart and decided let's split up. Benny and Frida's was a little more difficult. It was not a happy time but still very creative."

Music video

The music video, (directed by Lasse Hallström) despicted the band against various colored backdrops singing while facing each other, turning away as a new line is sung. At the end of the video, the band's female members were seen walking away through thick snow.
