Bob Marley - Could you be loved

"Could You Be Loved" is a song by reggae group Bob Marley & the Wailers.
It was released in 1980 on their last album Uprising and is included on Bob Marley & The Wailers greatest hits album Legend.
It was written in 1979 on an airplane while The Wailers were experimenting on guitar.
The song is considered by many reggae fans to be disco influenced, and by extension influencing the dancehall genre.
In the middle of the song, background singers quote a verse from Bob Marley's first single "Judge Not": "The road of life is rocky; And you may stumble too. So while you point a finger, someone else is judging you".
Instruments used on the original record of this song are guitars, bass, drums, acoustic piano, the Hohner clavinet and an organ, as well as the Brazilian cuíca.
Appearances in other media
Marley's song was played right after the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final.

  • British singer Joe Cocker covered "Could You Be Loved" on his 1997 album Across from Midnight. Unlike the original the cover is very rock-heavy.

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Stir It Up

Stir It Up is a song composed by Bob Marley in 1967, written for his wife Rita, and first made popular by Johnny Nash. Nash's recording hit the top 15 in both Britain and America in 1972.
When Bob Marley returned to Jamaica from the United States in 1967, The Wailers started their own label, ‘Wail'n Soul'm’ records, and released their first independent single "Freedom Time" backed with "Bend Down Low." "Nice Time," "Hypocrites," "Mellow Mood," "Thank You Lord," and "Stir It Up" are all recorded in the same year.
The label folded shortly after and Marley began writing for American singer Johnny Nash. On Nash's I Can See Clearly Now album, he used members of The Wailers and recorded several Marley songs: "Stir It Up," the follow-up single, "Comma Comma," "Guava Jelly," and the Nash/Marley co-written ballad, "You Poured Sugar on Me." The track "(It Was) So Nice While It Lasted" received radio play.
"Stir It Up" was Bob Marley's first successful song outside Jamaica. Another song written by Bob Marley, "I Shot The Sheriff", was made a hit by Eric Clapton in 1974. Marley's first "own" international hit would be "No Woman No Cry," the live version from the Bob Marley and the Wailers Live! album in 1975.
The Nash vinyl, 45 version of the song has appeared in CD format only once - TimeLife's "Sound of the Seventies: 1973 Take Two" CD. It includes several audio tracks that are not on the album version (e.g. the prominent vibraslap percussion), and some recorded at different levels, brass and strings in particular, which give the song a more recognizable sound, as it was this version that received radio play during the time the song was a hit, and not the album version. This was the version to receive radio play until the CD version was released. Other mixes eventually made it to vinyl 45 pressings, but thus far the original 45 mix still has not been released in an official digital version, other than the TimeLife CD.

In 1993, the song was covered by The Black Sorrows.
In 1993, the song was covered by Diana King for the 1993 movie Cool Runnings. The song also appears on the soundtrack album.
In 1993, the song was covered by Haddaway on his debut album Haddaway.
In 2009, The Fratellis covered the song for the compilation Island 50: 50 Years of Island Records.
In 2009, the song was used by K'naan and J. Period in their mixtape "The Messengers", which tributed Bob Marley. The version is called Fatima/Stir it up.

Bob Marley - Get Up, Stand Up (live)

Get Up, Stand Up is a reggae song written by Bob Marley and Peter Tosh.
The song originally appeared on The Wailers' 1973 album Burnin'. It was recorded and played live in numerous versions by The Wailers and Bob Marley & The Wailers, along with solo versions by Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. It was later included on the compilations Legend and Rebel Music, among others.
Marley wrote the song while flying out of Haiti, deeply moved by its poverty and the lives of Haitians, according his then-girlfriend Esther Anderson.
The song was frequently performed at Marley's concerts, often as the last song. "Get Up, Stand Up" was also the last song Marley ever performed on stage, on September 23, 1980 at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
On his DVD Live at the Hollywood Bowl, artist Ben Harper relates a childhood experience in which, during a 1978 Bob Marley concert at the Starlight Amphitheater, Peter Tosh showed up unannounced as this song was being performed, took the microphone from Marley and started singing the last verse of the song to thunderous applause. Tosh was on tour opening for the Rolling Stones at the time.
