Ane Brun - Words
Ane Brun (born Ane Brunvoll on 10 March 1976 in Molde, Norway) is a Norwegian international songwriter, guitarist and vocalist. Since 2003 she has recorded eight albums, six of which are studio albums (including a collection of duets) and one live DVD.
She has lived in Stockholm, Sweden since 2001, where she writes, records and runs her own label (Balloon Ranger Recordings) when not on tour.
Ane Brunvoll is the daughter of lawyer Knut Anker Brunvoll (b. 1945) and jazz singer and pianist Inger Johanne Brunvoll (b. Kvien). She grew up in a musical family and her younger sister is vocalist Mari Kvien Brunvoll (b. 1984). Her older sister is photographer Bjørn Brunvoll (b. 1973).
After growing up in Molde, Norway she moved from her home town in 1995 and spent the next few years moving between Barcelona, Oslo and Bergen. In Bergen she began writing her own material while at university (jumping between courses in Spanish, law and music) as well as making a living working in record shops and bars.
After playing a few minor shows and recording her first demos in Bergen in 1999, she moved to Sweden, first to Uppsala and then to Stockholm in 2001, where she started to take her musical career seriously.
Brun featured as one of the guests on Peter Gabriel's 2011 studio album New Blood, singing on the re-recorded version of "Don't Give Up", recorded in 2010. She was subsequently invited to perform with him as support act and back-up singer on the New Blood tour throughout 2010.
In late 2011 Brun released her sixth studio album It All Starts with One, produced by Tobias Fröberg.
On 11 March 2013 Brun performed her own adaptation of Dido's Lament, from Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell, at The Roundhouse in London.
On 29 May 2013, Ane Brun released a 32-track collection of songs from her first 10 years in the music industry, entitled Songs - 2003 to 2013, which included four new songs.
On 4 October 2013 she also released a 20-track collection of covers and out-takes entitled Rarities. This album was released as a surprise for fans, with no pre-promotion.
The lyrics:
Words, take her with you
Let her rest in your rhyme
Words, take her away
Somewhere, be on time
Words, ease her breathing
Lay her softly on the floor
There, let her linger
And listen like ever before

Leave, her windows, uncovered at night
And fill her room with the city lights
As they illuminate the sky
It reminds her of the people outside
Cause she won't sleep
Unless she heals her loneliness

Walk with her
Beneath the tree tops
Create new paths and memories
Show her, how the sunlight
Glances through the gaps between the leaves
Words, help her change the world
In only one verse
Tell her to reach for the stars
And to always put love first

Leave, her windows, uncovered at night
And fill her room with the city lights
As they illuminate the sky
It reminds her of the people outside
It reminds her of the people
It reminds her of the people

It reminds her of the people outside

The Civil Wars - Poison and Wine

The Civil Wars is an indie folk duo composed of CCM vocalist Joy Williams and guitarist/songwriter John Paul White.
This song is the title track of their first EP. It was released as the pair's first single on November 4, 2009.
It is the only song on the longplayer that Williams and White wrote with an outside collaborator - their friend Nashville songwriter Chris Lindsey.
The song is a thematic declaration of intent for The Civil Wars, encapsulating everything suggested in the duo's name when it comes to exploring the conflicts that arise as part of being a married couple. "That song probably does sum us up—The Civil Wars, the name of the band—as well as any song that we've written," said White.
"We're all married, and we were all talking about the good, the bad and the ugly, and just felt like: What would you say to someone if you were actually brutally honest—the things that you could never say because it would turn them away or let the cat out of the bag or reveal yourself to be weaker? What would you actually say if you had this invisible curtain around you and could just scream it in somebody's face and they'd actually never hear it? We were all being very painfully honest, because we're all very comfortable around each other and know that things like that never leave the room, except in a song. I'm pretty proud of that song, to be honest."
This came to many people's attention when it was heard prominently on the "New History" episode of Grey's Anatomy over a key climactic montage.
Other TV shows that its featured in include 90210 and The Vampire Diaries as well as the soundtrack to the movie Something Borrowed.
The song gained a wholly unsolicited endorsement when fellow Nashvillian Taylor Swift included it as a selection in her official iTunes playlist, tweeting, "I think this is my favorite duet. It's exquisite." The Civil Wars later teamed up with Swift to record "Safe and Sound" for the soundtrack of the movie, The Hunger Games.
White explained the song's meaning to UK newspaper, The Sun: "That song has parallels to our band and our band name," he said. "It's about all those battles you have with your spouse though it could be about addiction or even about your job. It was therapeutic to write.
We asked each other 'What would you scream at your partner - without them hearing or without any of the fallout — if you needed to get something off your chest? And that's how we wrote that song. We love to write in a way that is inclusive."
The lyrics:
You only know what I want you to
I know everything you don't want me to
Your mouth is poison, your mouth is wine
You think your dreams are the same as mine

Ooh, I don't love you but I always will
Ooh, I don't love you but I always will
I don't love you but I always will
I always will

I wish you'd hold me when I turn my back
The less I give, the more I get back
Ooh, your hands can heal, your hands can bruise
I don't have a choice but I still choose you

Ooh, I don't love you but I always will
Ooh, I don't love you but I always will
I don't love you but I always will
Ooh, I don't love you but I always will

I don't love you but I always will
I don't love you but I always will
I don't love you but I always will
I always will, I always will, I always will

I always will, I always will

Fever Ray - Keep The Streets Empty For Me

The official video for Keep The Streets Empty For Me, taken from Fever Ray's debut album 'Fever Ray' directed by Jens Klevje and Fabian Svensson.
"Fever Ray and the song Keep the Streets Empty struck us immediately with its fateful sound and images of abandoned suburbia begun to grow in front of our eyes. We wanted to continue the journey that started in the former videos and our ambition was to catch the feeling in a very direct and true way and create a video where dream and reality intertwine." - Fabian and Jens.
Fever Ray is stage name of Karin Elisabeth Dreijer Andersson (born 7 April 1975).
She is the lead vocalist of the electronic music duo The Knife, formed with her brother Olof Dreijer. Andersson was previously the vocalist and guitarist of the alternative rock band Honey Is Cool. Andersson released her debut solo album under the name Fever Ray in 2009.
Her vocal style is notable for both shrill and deep tones, and also the use of multitracked vocals, with different uses of pitch-shifting technology on each track, creating an intricate and mysterious effect.
Visually, Andersson employs the use of masks, face and body paint, intricate costumes, and other theatrical elements in photo shoots, videos and live performances, during which she often performs behind a gauze screen that partially obscures her from view.
Andersson performed as Fever Ray at the 2010 Coachella Festival and received positive reviews.
In September of the same year, she performed at Electric Picnic in Ireland and at Bestival in England.
Contrary to a statement from the film's director, Andersson did not make a cameo appareance in the 2011 film Red Riding Hood. However, the soundtrack features the exclusive track "The Wolf", which Andersson co-wrote with her band members, as well as "Keep the Streets Empty for Me".
Andersson wrote the music for the theatrical adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's 1968 horror film Hour of the Wolf, which premiered at Stockholm's Royal Dramatic Theatre on 12 March 2011.
One of these tracks, "No Face", appeared in demo form on the 2012 compilation album We Are the Works in Progress, organised by Blonde Redhead to benefit victims of the 2011 Japanese tsunami.
The lyrics:
Memory comes when memory's old
I am never the first to know
Following the stream up North
Where do people like us float

There is room in my lap
For bruises, asses, hand claps
I will never disappear
Forever, I'll be here

Whispering
Morning, keep the streets empty for me

I learned to not eat the snow
My fur is hot, my tongue is cold
On a bed of spider web
I think about to change myself

A lot of hope in a one man tent
There's no room for innocence
Take me home before the storm
Velvet mites will keep us warm

Whispering
Morning, keep the streets empty for me

Uncover our heads and reveal our souls
We were hungry before we were born

Martina Topley-Bird - Valentine

Martina Topley-Bird (born 7 May 1975, St Pancras, London) is an English vocalist and songwriter who first gained fame as the featured female vocalist on trip hop pioneer Tricky's debut album, Maxinquaye (a printing error credited her as "Martine"). She worked with him on his follow-up albums and, in 2003, released her own solo album, Quixotic.
Martina Topley-Bird is the daughter of well-known British direct marketing specialist, Drayton Bird, and her mother is Salvadoran, Seminole Indian and the rest is untraceable African American.
Her first contact with public persona was as a choir singer at Clifton College. It was while she was a teenager at the school that she met trip hop pioneer Tricky, with whom she worked on his first album Maxinquaye. She continued her collaboration with Tricky on his follow-up albums Nearly God, Pre-Millennium Tension and Angels with Dirty Faces. She gave birth to Tricky's daughter around the release of Maxinquaye.
Following a falling-out of their professional and personal relationship in 1998, she began pursuing a solo career. It was not until 2003 that she released her debut album, Quixotic (Independiente Records), mainly produced by Topley-Bird and production team AMP9 (Alex McGowan, Steve Crittall, Nick Bird) at Space Eko Recording Studios London. Upon its release, it received positive reviews from critics and was a finalist for the 2003 Mercury Music Prize. The song "Sandpaper Kisses" from the album was featured in the video game, Fahrenheit (released in North America as Indigo Prophecy).
The album finally saw a limited release in the United States in July 2004 when the Palm Pictures label released a re-designed and re-sequenced version with a new title (Anything), a trimmed-down tracklisting and all-new cover art.
The following year she appeared on the Starbucks compilation album, Sweetheart 2005: Love Songs, which features contemporary musicians covering classic love songs. She sang "I Only Have Eyes for You", a song originally by composer Harry Warren and lyricist Al Dubin.
Her second solo album, The Blue God, was released in May 2008. The track "Carnies" was released as the first single on 3 March 2008 and reached No.20 on the UK Indie Charts. "Poison" was released as the second single and reached No.9 on the Indie Charts.
In 2010, Topley-Bird appeared on the album Heligoland by Massive Attack, lending her voice on the tracks "Psyche" and "Babel". She also toured with Massive Attack as their support act and providing guest vocals. Topley-Bird's third album, Some Place Simple, was released in July 2010. It contained stripped-down versions of songs from her first two releases, along with four new songs.
Topley-Bird performed Maxinquaye live at the Sundance Festival, London, in April 2012.
The lyrics:
It's, oh, so late to start wishing
This heart of mine, you're gonna own
They fade away and now you're here
I didn't know there's only you

Valentine
Go out in the light

Why suffer back in the game
All living, all our sin the same
All the faithful heal, they're all praying
They refer to

Valentine
Oh, return

They release you then you turn to see
Make it feel alright

The only thing is that I didn't
I tried to climb my felon home
I feel overwhelmed and still your here
Your coming home but before you do

Valentine
Go out in the light
Out in the moonlit sky
I saw you there in blue

Portishead - Glory Box

Glory Box is a single by English trip hop group Portishead, released in 1995. The title song samples "Ike's Rap II" by Isaac Hayes (as does Tricky's "Hell Is Around The Corner" from Maxinquaye, released the same year). The song is a love song, featuring the frequent refrain, "I just want to be a woman."
The music video is set in the 1950s, featuring lead singer Beth Gibbons as a jazz singer at a club while various office workers watch her perform. Sexual tension begins to rise between certain characters, as eventually, all of the workers, as separate couples, attend the club where Beth is performing. Apart from the band members, the entire cast of the video appear in drag.
The song can be heard in several films, such as Stealing Beauty (1996), When the Cat's Away (1996),The Craft (1996), B. Monkey (1998), Tout pour plaire (2005), Lord of War (2005), and Antichrist (2009).
The song has also been used several TV series episodes, such as Rescue Me (episode #61), and Ringer (episode #3).
In France, the song featured in early 2000s in a TV advert for Candia milk.
It was also used in a Levi's Jeans commercial.
The 1998 cover by John Martyn was used in the film Colombiana (2011).
The lyrics:
I'm so tired of playing
Playin' with this bow and arrow
I gonna give my heart away
Leave it to the other girls to play
For I've been a temptress too long

Just give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be a woman
I just wanna be a woman

From this time unchained
We're all lookin' at a different picture
Through this new frame of mind
A thousand flowers could bloom
Move over and give us some room, yea

Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be a woman
I just wanna be a woman

So don't you stop, being a man
Just take a little look
From our side when you can
Show a little tenderness
No matter if you cry

Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be a woman
I just wanna be a woman
'Cause it's all I wanna be is all a woman, yea

For this is the beginning of forever and ever
Its time to move over
So tired of playing

So tired of playing
Playin' with this bow and arrow
I gonna give my heart away
Leave it to the other girls, to play
For I've been a temptress too long

Just give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be

Tori Amos - Silent All These Years (Live)

Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos; August 22, 1963) is an American pianist, singer-songwriter and composer.
She is a classically trained musician and possesses a mezzo-soprano vocal range.
Amos originally served as the lead singer of 1980s synthpop group Y Kant Tori Read, and as a solo artist was at the forefront of a number of female singer-songwriters in the early 1990s. She was also noteworthy early in her solo career as one of the few alternative rock performers to use a piano as her primary instrument. Some of her charting singles include "Crucify", "Silent All These Years", "God", "Cornflake Girl", "Caught a Lite Sneeze", "Professional Widow", "Spark", "1000 Oceans", and "A Sorta Fairytale", her most commercially successful single in the U.S. to date. As of 2005, Amos had sold 12 million albums worldwide.
She has been nominated for several awards, including 8 Grammy Award nominations.
"Silent All These Years" is a song by American singer-songwriter and musician Tori Amos. It was released as the second single from her debut studio album Little Earthquakes. It was originally released in November 1991 in the UK by EastWest Records. It was released in North America in April 1992 by Atlantic Records and was used promote awareness of the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN). In the UK the single was re-released on August 10, 1992.
Origins of song
"Silent All These Years" was written during Amos's search for self (and solo album material) after the failure of Y Kant Tori Read. According to her narrative during VH1 Storytellers, she originally wrote this song with Al Stewart in mind to sing it, and Eric Rosse, who was producing some other songs Amos had composed, heard it and told her, "You're out of your mind. That's your life story." So she kept it.
In the Little Earthquakes songbook, Amos reveals that writing the song was a slow, evolving process and that the light piano riff during the verses came first. This "bumble bee piano tinkle," as she calls it, is one of the more emblematic and recognizable parts of the song.
Lyrically, Amos was inspired by reading Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid story to her little niece, Cody.

Éléphant – Collective Mon Amour (2012)

Elephant is a band from London, made up of Amelia Rivas (vocals, keyboards) and Christian Pinchbeck (guitars, computers).
Elephant (from Pittsburgh) now has a full length available though iTunes entitled “Identities”.
Elephant is a Pittsburgh based band featuring members of Wings of Azrael. They currently have a ep and are in the process of recording a full length due sometime in 2010. The band runs a last.fm page under the name Elephant (PA) due to the other bands named “elephant”.
Theres more than one band under the name Elephant.
Elephant is a one-man project that reveres the metal it enjoys while using this passion to strengthen its own sound through constant experimentation and reinvention. Grateful for its dedicated fanbase yet refusing to take its praise for granted, Elephant has continued to resist fear and laziness out of the sheer thrill of creating music.
Elephant’s 2008 album, The Extinction Paradox, was further proof of Elephant’s need to progress. Each album has stood both as the best Elephant could achieve at the time as well as the standard to be destroyed with the following album. Throughout each success and failure, Elephant’s fans have mythologized the music better than Elephant itself ever could.
Elephant now presents its seventh and final album, The Defining Choice. Everything before this was practice. Featuring intense riffs, evolving song structures, and imaginative lyrics, this is the final frantic yet focused tirade from a musician who feels that he is a the end of his creativity. The result will either overwhelm the listener or lure them into the enjoyable insanity to witness a triumphant ending.
This was fun.
“Phrase builds upon phrase, riff builds upon riff, and before you realize it, you’re banging your head along to this even though nothing seems familiar and you can’t predict what’s coming next.” —-Metal Archives, 03/15/08.
“This is an esoteric metal-head’s wet dream as distorted chaotic guitar-oriented frenzy is dressed up in minimalist production, breaking down your mental faculties and causing you to lose control of all bodily functions.” —-The Metal Observer; 04/24/07.
“Thankfully, there are those out there who aren’t content to churn out stale releases enforcing the status quo. North Carolina’s Elephant (aka Chris Passas) is one such act.” —-VoidExpression.net; November 2006.
Elephant is a Toronto-based indie band consisting of Ian Kennedy, Matthew MacInnis, Brett Watterton &
Daniel Tal. Their first record entitled “The Violet Hour” was recently released to great reviews.

Great Mountain Fire – If a Kid (acoustic version, 2011)

Great Mountain Fire is an indie rock band from Brussels who from early in 2006 have produced exciting and razor sharp pop songs, attempting the impossible and often achieving it!

For five years the band (previously known as Nestor!) grew and gained important live experience at renowned venues and festivals (Dour Festival, Nuits du Botanique, etc.) and made a few recordings such as their self-produced E.P. “This Is A Party Favor”.

In June 2010, the band went into the studio to record what would become “Canopy”, Great Mountain Fire's first album.

Recorded under the watchful eyes and ears of Jean Waterlot (Ghinzu, Montevideo), the album expresses over its 11 tracks a rich and cultural depth, transporting the listener through the band's own unique and refreshing jungle of sounds.

The lyrics are:

Wait For the show, he’ll make the pensioners dance for you.

No one should know self-worship will kill them all.
But if a kid was king tonight, shaking his crown,
All the teddies would be kneeling down, tonight.
Brothers! The missing crownswill never joke. Hewaits alone. A warship is warming up.
On covers he rides ‘til the light turn on. No oneshould know ths beetles are waking up.
But if a kid was king tonight, shaking his crown,
All the teddies would be kneeling down, tonight.
Midnight is ringing out over the kingdom. Aparty begins behind the eyelids.
Under the beds beetles are walking to march to castles.
