Aerosmith - What Could Have Been Love

If you want more guitars, more ‘Legendary Child,’ more of the much-hyped Jack Douglas sound of Aerosmith‘s rockin’ ’70s, then their new single is not going to satisfy.
‘What Could Have Been Love’ is the AC radio hit the group needs to reach a wide audience and sell a ton of copies of ‘Music From Another Dimension‘ on Nov. 6.
Not surprisingly, Douglas didn’t produce this power-ballad. The honor goes to longtime friend and collaborator Marti Frederiksen, who also co-wrote the song along with Steven Tyler and keyboardist Russ Irwin (Frederiksen also helped write ‘Jaded’ from the ‘Just Push Play’ album).
Much like ‘Jaded,’ ‘Cryin’ and ‘Crazy,’ ‘What Could Have Been Love’ is a tight lyric wrapped in bright production that highlights Tyler’s voice.
“I wake up and wonder how everything went wrong / Am I the one to blame / I gave up and left you for a nowhere bound train,” he sings to open the song. (Can we please stop using trains as the ultimate rock metaphor?)
“Now that train (sigh) has come and gone / I close my eyes and see you lying in my bed / And I still dream of that day,” Tyler adds to finish the first verse. The backing vocalists take to repeating his lyrics late in the song, adding the only over-the-top moment of pop sensibility.
The stock chorus lacks imagination or real detail, but Tyler pulls it up with a passion one wouldn’t expect from a man who once broke hearts like Joey Kramer breaks drum sticks.
“What could have been love / Should have been the only thing that was ever meant to be / Didn’t know, couldn’t see what was right in front of me / And now that I’m alone all I have is emptiness that comes from being free / What could have been love will never be,” he sings.
The bottom line is that if this site was called Ultimate Classic Power Ballad, ‘What Could Have Been Love’ would be a staff favorite. Rock fans can appreciate the necessity of this style, but few will embrace it like a song that finds Joe Perry shredding on guitar, or Tyler doing his trademark vocal calisthenics between harmonica solos.
The lyrics:
I wake up and wonder
how everything went wrong
Am I the one to blame
I gave up and left you
For a nowhere bound train
Now that train has come and gone
I closed my eyes and see you
Lying in my bed
and i still dreamed of that day
What could have been love
Should have been the only thing
that was ever meant to be
Didnt know couldnt see
what was right in front of me
And now that Im alone
All I have is emptiness that comes from being free
What could have been love will never be
yeahhh
An old friend who told me that you found somebody new
ohhhhh, youre finally moving on
You think that Id be over you
after all these years
Yeahhh but time is proving wrong
Cause im still holding on
Yea yea Yea
What could have been love
Should have been the only thing
that was ever meant to be
Didnt know couldnt see
what was right in front of me
(What could have been love)
And now that Im alone
All I have is emptiness that comes from being free
What could have been love will never be
yeah
We've gone our separate ways
Say goodbye to another way
Still wonder where you are
Or are you too far from talking back
You were slipping through my hands and I didnt understand

What could have been love
Should have been the only thing
that was ever meant to be
Didnt know couldnt see
what was right in front of me
(What could have been love)
And now that Im alone
All I have is emptiness that comes from being free
What could have been love will never be
What could have been love will never be
What could have been love
What could have been love
What could have been love
(What could have been What could have been)

(Love)

Aerosmith - I Don't Want to Miss a Thing

I Don't Want to Miss a Thing is a power ballad performed by American rock band Aerosmith for the 1998 film Armageddon.
Written by Diane Warren, the song debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 (the first #1 for the band after 28 years together). The song stayed at number one for four weeks from September 5 to September 26, 1998.
The song also stayed at number 1 for several weeks in several other countries. In the UK, the song peaked at number four, becoming Aerosmith's highest charting song in the UK, where it was the 17th best-selling single of 1998, and has sold over a million copies.
This song was Aerosmith's biggest hit, debuting at number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for four weeks in September, and reaching number 1 in many countries around the world, including Australia, the Philippines, Germany, Ireland, Austria, Norway, Italy, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.
The song was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song, but lost to "When You Believe" from the film The Prince of Egypt.
The song was also nominated for the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Original Song, losing to "I Wanna Be Mike Ovitz!" from An Alan Smithee Film Burn Hollywood Burn.
It is one of only three songs to be nominated for both awards, the others being "How Do I Live," from Con Air (also by Warren) and "Life in a Looking Glass," from That's Life! (music by Henry Mancini, lyrics by Leslie Bricusse), neither of which won either award.
It has won an MTV Movie Award for Best Song from a Movie in 1999.
The chorus of the song is highly reminiscent of an earlier song Diane Warren co-wrote, "Just Like Jesse James", which appeared on Cher's 1989 album Heart of Stone.
The song helped open up Aerosmith to a new generation and remains a slow dance staple.
It was one of many songs written by Diane Warren in that time period. The original version was a collaboration between Chicago musician Phil Kosch of Treaty of Paris and Super Happy Fun club, and nephew of chart topping writer Lou Bega. Lou introduced the two and they penned the initial track, but ultimately Kosch was left uncredited.
Music video
The music video for this song was shot at the Minneapolis Armory in 1998 and was directed by Francis Lawrence.
It features the band playing the song intertwined with scenes from the film Armageddon. It features an appearance by Steven Tyler's daughter Liv, who plays Grace Stamper in the film. Steven Tyler hurt his knee the day before the shoot, so they used a lot of close-ups because his movement was limited.
The video begins with shots of the moon in orbit and several meteorites passing by and then a view of earth before zooming in to show Steven Tyler singing. The shots interchange between the band and Mission Control viewing the band singing via their monitors. As the video progresses it reveals that the band is playing in front of what appears to be the fictional Space Shuttle Freedom. Along with Aerosmith, a full hand orchestra plays in sync with the melody.
Smoke surrounds the orchestra and Aerosmith as Freedom takes off from the launch pad. Finally, the screen goes out as a tearful Grace touches one of the monitors to reach out to her father (real life father Steven Tyler in the video; on-screen father Harry Stamper, played by Bruce Willis, in the film).
The video won awards for MTV Video Music Award for Best Video from a Film, and Best Video at Boston Music Awards.
The lyrics:
I could stay awake just to hear you breathing
Watch you smile while you are sleeping
While you're far away and dreaming
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender
I could stay lost in this moment forever
Where every moment spent with you is a moment I treasure

Don't want to close my eyes
I don't want to fall asleep
Cause I'd miss you babe
And I don't want to miss a thing
Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
I'd still miss you babe
And I don't want to miss a thing

Lying close to you feeling your heart beating
And I'm wondering what you're dreaming
Wondering if it's me you're seeing
Then I kiss your eyes
And thank God we're together
I just want to stay with you in this moment forever
Forever and ever

I don't want to close my eyes
I don't want to fall asleep
Cause I'd miss you babe
And I don't want to miss a thing
Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
I'd still miss you babe
And I don't want to miss a thing

I don't want to miss one smile
I don't want to miss one kiss
I just want to be with you
Right here with you, just like this
I just want to hold you close
Feel your heart so close to mine
And just stay here in this moment
For all the rest of time Yeah yeah yeah

I don't want to close my eyes
I don't want to fall asleep
Cause I'd miss you babe
And I don't want to miss a thing
Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
I'd still miss you babe
And I don't want to miss a thing

I Don't want to close my eyes
I don't want to fall asleep
Cause I'd miss you babe
And I don't want to miss a thing
Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
I'd still miss you babe
And I don't want to miss a thing

Don't want to close my eyes
I don't want to fall asleep
And I don't want to miss a thing

Aerosmith - Dream On (live, 2012)

Dream On is a power ballad by Aerosmith from their 1973 debut album, Aerosmith.
Written by lead singer Steven Tyler, this song became their first major hit and classic rock radio staple.
Released in June 1973, it peaked at number 59 nationally but hit big in the band's native Boston, where it was the number 1 single of the year on the less commercial top 40 station, WBZ-FM, number 5 for the year on highly rated Top 40 WRKO-AM and number 16 on heritage Top 40 WMEX-AM.
The chorus of the song was famously sampled in the 2003 song Sing for the Moment by rapper Eminem.
It is also associated with the Boston Red Sox baseball organization and Warner Bros. Entertainment and its divisions (Cartoon Network, DC Comics, Hanna-Barbera and Looney Tunes).
"Dream On" was first played live in Mansfield, Connecticut at the Shaboo Inn. In a 2011 interview, Steven Tyler reminisced about his father, a Juilliard-trained musician. He recalled lying beneath his dad's piano as a three-year-old listening to him play classical music. "That's where I got that Dream On chordage," he said.
Steven Tyler says that this was the only song on the band's first album where he used his "real" voice. He was insecure about how his voice sounded on tape, so for the other songs, he tried to sing a bit lower and sound more like soul artists, such as James Brown. The song is also famous for its building climax to showcase Tyler's trademark screams.
The song "Dream On" is part of the The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list. It is also ranked #172 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
On February 25, 2013, Massachusetts State Representative James Cantwell (D) of Marshfield and Massachusetts State Representative Josh S. Cutler (D) of Duxbury drafted a bill to name "Dream On" the Official State Rock song of Massachusetts.
Other covers
Ronnie James Dio, Yngwie Malmsteen, Stu Hamm, Gregg Bissonette and Paul Taylor covered the song for the Aerosmith tribute album Not the Same Old Song and Dance (Eagle Records, 1999). Additional guitars were by the album's producers Bob Kulick and Bruce Bouillet.
Danny Gokey sang this song on American Idol Season 8 in 2009 during the Top 4 round. He received negative reviews from the judges, and was also mocked in many media outlets for an long, ear-splitting scream at the end of the song.
The song was sampled by American rapper Eminem for his song "Sing for the Moment", from his 2002 album The Eminem Show. Joe Perry played the guitar solo on the track and Steven Tyler also sang the chorus for the track and Eminem said "sing", "sing with me" and "come on" in the chorus.
"Dream On" was covered by the American rock band Train on an episode of the MTV show, Icon that was dedicated to Aerosmith.
The song was re-made by Andru Donalds as the cover song for his album of the same name.
"Dream On" was covered by The Mission on their album Children.
"Dream On" was also covered by Fisher on their Uppers & Downers dual-disc album. The cover version performed by Fisher was featured in the series-finale episode of the NBC drama Windfall.
Michael Angelo Batio also made an instrumental cover of this song in his album Hands Without Shadows.
blessthefall covered "Dream On" on the compilation cover album Punk Goes Classic Rock, which is part of the Punk Goes... series.
The song was remixed by Immortal Technique on his song "Angels & Demons", on his album The Martyr.
In 2011, Reece Mastin, X Factor Australia winner, covered this song for his eponymous album.
American post-grunge band Cold covered this song which later appeared on their fifth album Superfiction as bonus track.
Instrumental jazz cover on this song was performed by Alex Skolnick Trio on their album Goodbye to Romance: Standards for a New Generation in 2002.
Amanda Brown sang this song in the live playoffs of season 3 of The Voice U.S..
Greg X. Volz formerly of Petra covered this song on the album "Come Out Fighting" in 1988
Andy Mac Unfraidh performed the song during the live shows of second series of The Voice of Ireland.
The lyrics:
Every time I look in the mirror
All these lines on my face getting clearer
The past is gone
It went by, like dusk to dawn
Isn't that the way
Everybody's got their dues in life to pay

Yeah, I know nobody knows
where it comes and where it goes
I know it's everybody's sin
You got to lose to know how to win

Half my life's
in books' written pages
Lived and learned from fools and
from sages
You know it's true
All the things come back to you

Sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tear
Sing with me just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good lord will take you away

Yeah, sing with me, sing for the year
sing for the laughter, sing for the tear
sing with me, just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away

Dream On Dream On Dream On
Dream until your dream comes true
Dream On Dream On Dream On
Dream until your dream comes through
Dream On Dream On Dream On
Dream On Dream On
Dream On Dream On, AHHHHHHH

Sing with me, sing for the year
sing for the laughter, sing for the tear
sing with me just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away
Sing with me, sing for the year
sing for the laughter, sing for the tear
Sing with me just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away......

Aerosmith and Run DMC - Walk this way

Walk This Way is a song by American hard rock group Aerosmith.
Written by Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, the song was originally released as the second single from the 1975 album Toys in the Attic. It peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1977, part of a string of successful hit singles for the band in the 1970s.
In addition to being one of the songs that helped break Aerosmith into the mainstream in the 1970s, it also helped revitalize their career in the 1980s when it was covered by rappers Run–D.M.C. in their 1986 album Raising Hell. This cover was a touchstone for the new musical sub-genre of rap rock, or the melding of rock and hip hop.
It became an international hit and won both groups a Soul Train Music Award for Best Rap - Single in 1987.
The song was inspired from an oft-spoken line and gag ("Walk this way") from the Mel Brooks film, Young Frankenstein, which the band saw during a late-night showing while taking a break and trying to record a song for their third album, Toys in the Attic. The song, at the time, had music but no lyrics thus far.
The song starts out with the famous two measure drum beat intro by Joey Kramer, followed by the equally famous guitar riff by Joe Perry. The song proceeds with the main riff, played by Perry and Brad Whitford on guitar with Tom Hamilton on bass.
The lyrics, which tell the story of a high school boy losing his virginity, are sung quite fast by Steven Tyler, with heavy emphasis being placed on the rhyming lyrics (e.g., "so I took a big chance at the high school dance"). This rap-style delivery may explain why the song worked so well as a rap song when it was covered 11 years later.
Between the elaborately detailed verses, the chorus primarily consists of a repetition of "Walk this way, talk this way". In collaborations, the other singer often says "talk this way" every alternate line of the chorus. Live in concert, Steven Tyler often has the audience, combined with members of the band, sing "talk this way". There is also a lengthy guitar solo at the end of the song, and in concert, Steven Tyler will often harmonize his voice to mimic the sounds of the guitar.
In the Run–D.M.C. cover, the turntable is added in to reflect the additional hip hop influence on the record. Both the original Aerosmith version and the Run–D.M.C. cover (featuring Steven Tyler and Joe Perry) appear on various Aerosmith compilations as well as Run-DMC albums.
While the Run–D.M.C. cover is nearly identical to the original version, the Girls Aloud/Sugababes cover has a few changes tweaked into the song; the additional line "Walk this way, you wanna talk this way" is added, the vocoder is added, the lyrics are moved around, and the beat is slightly sped up to add a further dance-pop influence to the song.
The 1986 music video for "Walk This Way" symbolically placed Aerosmith and Run–D.M.C. in a musical duel in neighboring studios before Tyler literally breaks through the wall that separates them. The video then segues to the bands' joint performance on stage. The highly popular video was the first rap hybrid video ever played in heavy rotation on MTV and is regarded as a classic of the medium. The video was directed by Jon Small.
Aside from Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, none of the other rock musicians in the video are the Aerosmith members; instead, they were played by Roger Lane, J. D. Malo and Matt Stelutto - respectively rhythm guitarist, bassist and drummer for the largely unknown hair metal outfit Smashed Gladys. According to VH1's Pop Up Video, Run–D.M.C. couldn't afford to use the entire Aerosmith band, just Tyler and Perry. As only Steven Tyler and Joe Perry had travelled to record the cover with Run–D.M.C., they were the only real Aerosmith members to appear in the video.

In the 1987 movie China Girl, the Run–D.M.C. version is featured in a nightclub scene where the character Tye (played by Sari Chang) is changing clothes in the ladies restroom.
The lyrics:
Backstroke lover always hidin' 'neath the covers
Till I talked to your daddy, he say
He said "you ain't seen nothin' till you're down on a muffin
Then you're sure to be a-changin' your ways"
I met a cheerleader, was a real young bleeder
Oh, the times I could reminisce
'Cause the best things of lovin' with her sister and her cousin
Only started with a little kiss
Like this!

Seesaw swingin' with the boys in the school
And your feet flyin' up in the air
Singin' "hey diddle diddle"
With your kitty in the middle of the swing
Like you didn't care
So I took a big chance at the high school dance
With a missy who was ready to play
Wasn't me she was foolin'
'Cause she knew what she was doin'
And I knowed love was here to stay
When she told me to

Walk this way
Just gimme a kiss
Like this!

Schoolgirl sweetie with a classy kinda sassy
Little skirt's climbin' way up the knee
There was three young ladies in the school gym locker
When I noticed they was lookin' at me
I was a high school loser, never made it with a lady
Till the boys told me somethin' I missed
Then my next door neighbor with a daughter had a favor
So I gave her just a little kiss
Like this!

Seesaw swingin' with the boys in the school
And your feet flyin' up in the air
Singin' "hey diddle diddle"
With your kitty in the middle of the swing
Like you didn't care
So I took a big chance at the high school dance
With a missy who was ready to play
Wasn't me she was foolin'
'Cause she knew what she was doin'
And I knowed love was here to stay
When she told me to

When she told me how to walk this way, she told me to

[Repeat x8]
Walk this way

Just gimme a kiss
Like this!

Aerosmith - Love in an elevator

Love in an Elevator is a song performed by American hard rock band Aerosmith, written by Steven Tyler and guitarist/backing vocalist Joe Perry.
It was released in August 1989 as the lead single from their third album with Geffen Records, Pump, released in September (see 1989 in music). It peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number 1 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
Love in an Elevator, like the other tracks on Pump, were recorded sometime in April to June 1989 at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia.
During the writing process, lead singer Steven Tyler is said to have come upon the concept of the song while researching famous battleships. Specifically, an instance on the Russian Battleship Navarin, in which one of the crew was famously quoted, as the ship was going down, "Мы должны жить вверх, в то время как мы теперь идем вниз," or when translated "we must live upwards now, for it is downward we head." Steven Tyler claims the song's lyrics were inspired by an experience he had at a hotel, in which he was making out with a girl in the elevator and they started having sex as the doors opened; “It felt like a lifetime waiting for those doors to close,” quipped Tyler.
The song was produced by Bruce Fairbairn and was engineered by Mike Fraser with Ken Lomas as second engineer, and in addition to Aerosmith – Steven Tyler (lead vocals), Joe Perry (guitars, backing vocals), Brad Whitford (guitars), Tom Hamilton (electric bass, backing vocals), & Joey Kramer (drums, percussion) – were Bob Dowd (backing vocals), Bruce Fairbairn (backing vocals), and Catherine Epps (elevator operator).
The lyrics:
Workin' like a dog for the boss man
Workin' for the company
I'm bettin' on the dice I'm tossin'
I'm gonna have a fantasy

But where am I gonna look?
They tell me that love is blind
I really need a girl like an open book
To read between the lines

Love In An Elevator
Livin' it up when I'm goin' down
Love In An Elevator
Lovin' it up till I hit the ground

Jackie's in the elevator
Lingerie second floor
She said 'can I see you later
And love you just a little more?'

I kinda hope we get stuck
Nobody gets out alive
She said 'I'll show you how to fax
In the mailroom, honey
And have you home by five'

Love In An Elevator
Livin' it up when I'm goin' down
Love In An Elevator
Lovin' it up till I hit the ground

In the air, in the air, honey one more time
Now it ain't fair
Love in an elevator
Lovin' it up when I'm goin' down

(Guitar Solo)

Love in an elevator
Goin' down

(Guitar Solo

Love In An Elevator
Lovin' it up when I'm goin' down
Love In An Elevator
Livin' it up till I hit the ground

Gonna be a penthouse pauper
Gonna be a millionare
I'm gonna be a real fast talker
And have me a love affair

Gotta get my timin' right
It's a test that I gotta pass
I'll chase you all the way to stairway, honey
Kiss your sassafrass

Love In An Elevator
Lovin' it up when I'm goin' down

Love In An Elevator
Livin' it up till I hit the ground

In the air, in the air, honey one more time
Now it ain't fair

In the air, in the air, in the air, in the air

Love In An Elevator
Lovin' it up when I'm goin' down
