Sophie Tith - Firework
Biographie

Harry Belafonte - Banana Boat Song (live, 1997)

A fantastic performance of the Banana Boat Song. This concert was recorded in 1997 (State University Of New York at Purchase). The audience is great!
Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) is a traditional Jamaican mento folk song, the best-known version of which was sung by Harry Belafonte and an alternate version interspersed with another Jamaican folksong, Hill and Gully Rider, by Dame Shirley Bassey.
Despite the song's mento influences, "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" is widely known as an example of calypso music. It is a work song, from the point of view of dock workers working the night shift loading bananas onto ships. Daylight has come, the shift is over and they want their work to be counted up so that they can go home.
The song was originally a Jamaican folk song. Its popular version was adapted by Barbadian Irving Burgie. It was thought to be sung by Jamaican banana workers, with a repeated melody and refrain (call and response); with each set lyric there would be a response from the workers but using many different sets of lyrics, some possibly improvised on the spot. The first recorded version was done by Trinidadian singer Edric Connor and his band "Edric Connor and the Caribbeans" in 1952, on the album Songs From Jamaica; the song was called "Day Dah Light".
Belafonte based his version on Edric Connor's 1952 and Louise Bennett's 1954 recordings.
In 1955, singer/songwriters Irving Burgie and William Attaway wrote a version of the lyrics for the Colgate Comedy Hour in which the song was performed by Harry Belafonte. This is the version that is by far the best known to listeners today, as it reached number five on the Billboard charts in 1957 and later became Belafonte's signature song. Side two of Belafonte's 1956 Calypso album opens with "Star O", a song referring to the day shift ending with the first star seen in the sky.
Also in 1956, folk singer Bob Gibson, who had travelled to Jamaica and heard the song, taught his version of it to the folk band The Tarriers. They recorded a version of that song that mixed in the chorus of another Jamaican folk song, "Hill and Gully Rider", and released it, spawning what became their biggest hit. It outdid Belafonte's original on the pop charts, reaching number four. This version was re-recorded by Shirley Bassey in 1957, and became a hit in the United Kingdom.
The Tarriers, or some subset of the three members of the group (Erik Darling, Bob Carey and Alan Arkin) are sometimes credited as the writers of the song, perhaps because their version of the song, which mixed in another song, was an original creation.
The lyrics:
Day-o, Day-ay-ay-o
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Day, me say day, me say day, me say day
Me say day, me say day-ay-ay-o
Daylight come and me wan' go home

Work all night on a drink a' rum
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Stack banana till the mornin' come
Daylight come and me wan' go home

Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana
Daylight come and me wan' go home

Lift six foot, seven foot, eight foot BUNCH!
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Six foot, seven foot, eight foot BUNCH!
Daylight come and me wan' go home

Day, me say day-ay-ay-o
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Day, me say day, me say day, me say day...
Daylight come and me wan' go home

A beautiful bunch a' ripe banana
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Hide the deadly black tarantula
Daylight come and me wan' go home

It's six foot, seven foot, eight foot BUNCH!
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Six foot, seven foot, eight foot BUNCH!
Daylight come and me wan' go home

Day, me say day-ay-ay-o
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Day, me say day, me say day, me say day...
Daylight come and me wan' go home

Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana
Daylight come and me wan' go home

Day-o, day-ay-ay-o
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Day, me say day, me say day, me say day
Me say day, me say day-ay-ay-o
Daylight come and me wan' go home

Des`Ree - Kissing You (Romeo & Juliet soundtrack)

Kissing You (or "I'm Kissing You") is a song by British singer Des'ree. It was written by the singer with Timothy Atack for Baz Luhrmann's 1996 film Romeo and Juliet.
The song was included on the film's soundtrack album and Des'ree's third studio album, Supernatural (1998).
The song was well received by critics for its emotional melody and toned-down production. Released as a single on 18 June 1997, it appeared on the ARIA Singles Chart and the UK Singles Chart. A music video accompanied the single, which included scenes from Romeo + Juliet.
"Kissing You" has been covered by Beyoncé Knowles (2007), Taylor Dayne (2008) and Stan Walker (2010). Knowles filmed a music video for her rendition, which she retitled "Still in Love (Kissing You)". The change of title and music video went against copyright terms, and thus Des'ree's publishers filed a lawsuit against Knowles and her representatives. Infringing albums were recalled, and both parties agreed that the case be dismissed with prejudice.
"Kissing You" is featured during Romeo + Juliet, directed by Baz Luhrmann, when Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Juliet (Claire Danes) first meet at a ball at the Capulets' mansion; Des'ree also appears in the scene performing the song.
"Kissing You" was also sold as the B-side to "Life" (1998) in the UK.
The musical interlude in the middle of "Kissing You" was used to promote the UEFA Euro 2004.
The music video for "Kissing You" features scenes of Romeo + Juliet, mainly those when Romeo and Juliet first meet at the Capulets' ball. Interspersed are clips of Des'ree singing the song in an empty building, with water on the floor. Towards the end of the video, some of the final scenes of the film are displayed, and the building that Des'ree is in is illuminated through the windows. The video was included on the film's special edition DVD, released in 2002.
The lyrics:
Pride can stand a thousand trials,
the strong will never fall
But watching stars without you,
my soul cried.
Heaving heart is full of pain,
oh, oh, the aching.
'Cause I'm kissing you, oh.
I'm kissing you, oh.
Touch me deep, pure and true,
gift to me forever
'Cause I'm kissing you, oh.
I'm kissing you, oh.
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
'Cause I'm kissing you.
I'm kissing you, oh.

Keith Jarrett - Summertime

This video is a Keith Jarrett Solo Tribute on the 100th Performance in Japan, in 1987.
Keith Jarrett (born May 8, 1945) is an American pianist and composer who performs both jazz and classical music.
Jarrett started his career with Art Blakey, moving on to play with Charles Lloyd and Miles Davis. Since the early 1970s he has enjoyed a great deal of success in jazz, jazz fusion, and classical music; as a group leader and a solo performer. His improvisations draw not only from the traditions of jazz, but from other genres as well, especially Western classical music, gospel, blues, and ethnic folk music.
In 2003, Jarrett received the Polar Music Prize, the first (and to this day only) recipient not to share the prize with a co-recipient and in 2004 he received the Léonie Sonning Music Prize.
In 2008, he was inducted into the Down Beat Hall of Fame in the magazine's 73rd Annual Readers' Poll.

Manu Chao - Si me das a elegir

The song is originally by Los Chunguitos, titled "Me Quedo Contigo".
Manu Chao (born José-Manuel Thomas Arthur Chao; June 21, 1961) is a Spanish/French singer who sings in French, Spanish, English, Italian, Galician, Arabic, and Portuguese and occasionally in other languages.
Chao began his musical career in Paris, busking and playing with groups such as Hot Pants and Los Carayos, which combined a variety of languages and musical styles. With friends and his brother Antoine Chao, he founded the band Mano Negra in 1987, achieving considerable success, particularly in Europe.
He became a solo artist after its breakup in 1995, and since then tours regularly with his live band, Radio Bemba.
Chao was born to Spanish parents. His mother, Felisa Ortega, is from Bilbao, Basque country, and his father, writer and journalist Ramón Chao, is from Vilalba, Galicia.
They emigrated to Paris to avoid Francisco Franco's dictatorship—Manu's grandfather had been sentenced to death.
Shortly after Manu's birth, the Chao family moved to the outskirts of Paris, and Manu spent most of his childhood in Boulogne-Billancourt and Sèvres. As he grew up he was surrounded by many artists and intellectuals, most of whom were acquaintances of his father. Chao cites much of his childhood experience as inspiration for some songs.
The lyrics:
Si me das a elegir
Entre tÚ y mis ideas
Que yo sin ellas
Soy un hombre perdido
Si me das a elegir
Entre tú y la gloria
Pa que hable la historia de mi
Por los siglos
Si me das a elegir
Entre tú y ese cielo
Donde libre es el vuelo
Para llegar a otros nidos
Si me das a elegir
Me quedo contigo
Pues me enamorado
Y te quiero y te quiero
Y solo deseo
Estar a tu lado
Soñar con tus ojos
Besarte los labios
Si me das a elegir
Entre tÚ y mis ideas
Que yo sin ellas
Soy un hombre perdido
Si me das a elegir
Me quedo contigo
Pues me enamorado
Y te quiero y te quiero
Y solo deseo
Estar a tu lado
Soñar con tus ojos
Besarte los labios
Si me das a elegir
Entre tú y la gloria
Pa que hable la historia de mi
Por los siglos
Si me das a elegir
Me quedo contigo
Si me das a elegir
Entre tÚ y mis ideas
Que yo sin ellas
Soy un hombre perdido
Si me das a elegir
Me quedo contigo
Pues me enamorado
Y te quiero y te quiero
Y solo deseo
Estar a tu lado
Soñar con tus ojos
Besarte los labios
Si me das a elegir
Entre tú y la gloria
Pa que hable la historia de mi
Por los siglos
Si me das a elegir
Me quedo contigo
Pues me enamorado
Y te quiero y te quiero
Y solo deseo
Estar a tu lado
Soñar con tus ojos
Besarte los labios
Sentirme en tus brazos
Que soy muy feliz
Si me das a elegir
Entre tÚ y mis ideas
Que yo sin ellas
Soy un hombre perdido
Si me das a elegir
Entre tú y ese cielo
Donde libre es el vuelo
Para llegar a otros nidos

Martina Topley-Bird - Valentine

Martina Topley-Bird (born 7 May 1975, St Pancras, London) is an English vocalist and songwriter who first gained fame as the featured female vocalist on trip hop pioneer Tricky's debut album, Maxinquaye (a printing error credited her as "Martine"). She worked with him on his follow-up albums and, in 2003, released her own solo album, Quixotic.
Martina Topley-Bird is the daughter of well-known British direct marketing specialist, Drayton Bird, and her mother is Salvadoran, Seminole Indian and the rest is untraceable African American.
Her first contact with public persona was as a choir singer at Clifton College. It was while she was a teenager at the school that she met trip hop pioneer Tricky, with whom she worked on his first album Maxinquaye. She continued her collaboration with Tricky on his follow-up albums Nearly God, Pre-Millennium Tension and Angels with Dirty Faces. She gave birth to Tricky's daughter around the release of Maxinquaye.
Following a falling-out of their professional and personal relationship in 1998, she began pursuing a solo career. It was not until 2003 that she released her debut album, Quixotic (Independiente Records), mainly produced by Topley-Bird and production team AMP9 (Alex McGowan, Steve Crittall, Nick Bird) at Space Eko Recording Studios London. Upon its release, it received positive reviews from critics and was a finalist for the 2003 Mercury Music Prize. The song "Sandpaper Kisses" from the album was featured in the video game, Fahrenheit (released in North America as Indigo Prophecy).
The album finally saw a limited release in the United States in July 2004 when the Palm Pictures label released a re-designed and re-sequenced version with a new title (Anything), a trimmed-down tracklisting and all-new cover art.
The following year she appeared on the Starbucks compilation album, Sweetheart 2005: Love Songs, which features contemporary musicians covering classic love songs. She sang "I Only Have Eyes for You", a song originally by composer Harry Warren and lyricist Al Dubin.
Her second solo album, The Blue God, was released in May 2008. The track "Carnies" was released as the first single on 3 March 2008 and reached No.20 on the UK Indie Charts. "Poison" was released as the second single and reached No.9 on the Indie Charts.
In 2010, Topley-Bird appeared on the album Heligoland by Massive Attack, lending her voice on the tracks "Psyche" and "Babel". She also toured with Massive Attack as their support act and providing guest vocals. Topley-Bird's third album, Some Place Simple, was released in July 2010. It contained stripped-down versions of songs from her first two releases, along with four new songs.
Topley-Bird performed Maxinquaye live at the Sundance Festival, London, in April 2012.
The lyrics:
It's, oh, so late to start wishing
This heart of mine, you're gonna own
They fade away and now you're here
I didn't know there's only you

Valentine
Go out in the light

Why suffer back in the game
All living, all our sin the same
All the faithful heal, they're all praying
They refer to

Valentine
Oh, return

They release you then you turn to see
Make it feel alright

The only thing is that I didn't
I tried to climb my felon home
I feel overwhelmed and still your here
Your coming home but before you do

Valentine
Go out in the light
Out in the moonlit sky
I saw you there in blue

Portishead - Glory Box

Glory Box is a single by English trip hop group Portishead, released in 1995. The title song samples "Ike's Rap II" by Isaac Hayes (as does Tricky's "Hell Is Around The Corner" from Maxinquaye, released the same year). The song is a love song, featuring the frequent refrain, "I just want to be a woman."
The music video is set in the 1950s, featuring lead singer Beth Gibbons as a jazz singer at a club while various office workers watch her perform. Sexual tension begins to rise between certain characters, as eventually, all of the workers, as separate couples, attend the club where Beth is performing. Apart from the band members, the entire cast of the video appear in drag.
The song can be heard in several films, such as Stealing Beauty (1996), When the Cat's Away (1996),The Craft (1996), B. Monkey (1998), Tout pour plaire (2005), Lord of War (2005), and Antichrist (2009).
The song has also been used several TV series episodes, such as Rescue Me (episode #61), and Ringer (episode #3).
In France, the song featured in early 2000s in a TV advert for Candia milk.
It was also used in a Levi's Jeans commercial.
The 1998 cover by John Martyn was used in the film Colombiana (2011).
The lyrics:
I'm so tired of playing
Playin' with this bow and arrow
I gonna give my heart away
Leave it to the other girls to play
For I've been a temptress too long

Just give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be a woman
I just wanna be a woman

From this time unchained
We're all lookin' at a different picture
Through this new frame of mind
A thousand flowers could bloom
Move over and give us some room, yea

Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be a woman
I just wanna be a woman

So don't you stop, being a man
Just take a little look
From our side when you can
Show a little tenderness
No matter if you cry

Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be a woman
I just wanna be a woman
'Cause it's all I wanna be is all a woman, yea

For this is the beginning of forever and ever
Its time to move over
So tired of playing

So tired of playing
Playin' with this bow and arrow
I gonna give my heart away
Leave it to the other girls, to play
For I've been a temptress too long

Just give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be

De-Phazz & The Radio Big Band Frankfurt - The Mambo Craze

De Phazz is a downtempo jazz ensemble integrating modern turntablism and elements of soul, Latin, trip hop and drum and bass into a lounge music sound. De Phazz is led by Pit Baumgartner, a German producer who has varied the lineup of artists for every new album.
Some regular members are Barbara Lahr, Karl Frierson and Pat Appleton. The band has released records on Mole Listening Pearls and Universal Jazz Germany along with single releases on Edel Records and United Recordings, and also remixes existing material.
The lyrics:
- Why, Lucy, your eyes are filled with tears?
- My heart is strained with bloodness
Oh look, the orchestra is getting ready,
dance with me, George!
Check the scene outside of Medellin.
Make a fuss in Caracas
Mixed guys and dark men at the bars
Mambo's slow Guantanamo
Was so glad escape in Trinidad
Outside down in Kingston town
Stole a car in the streets of Panama
Went too far in Bogota

Space cake brake at the Titicaca lake
Got some more in Ecuador
Out for a dance in a dive in Puerto Prince
Went too far in Bogota

A little weak, a little pale today
Looks like it's time, for that certain holiday

A little weak, a little pale today

A little weak, a little pale today

"Rip 'em up"

Space cake brake on the Titicaca lake
Got some more in Ecuador
Stole a car in the streets of Panama
Went too far in Bogota

A little weak, a little pale today
Looks like it's time, for that certain holiday

A little weak, a little pale today
Looks like it's time, for that certain holiday

A little weak, a little pale today
