Macy Gray - I try

"I Try" is a song co-written and recorded by American musician Macy Gray. It was released in September 1999 as the second single from her debut album On How Life Is, released in North America in January 2000 (See below).
It was Gray's biggest hit to date. It peaked at number six in the United Kingdom, number five in the United States, and number one in Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland.

At the 2001 Grammy Awards, "I Try" won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, the first to be awarded to an African-American artist winner in the category, since Toni Braxton's "Un-Break My Heart" in 1997, and was also nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It remains Gray's biggest hit single in the USA to date, and her only one to reach the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. In 2010, the song was featured in an episode of The Office.

The video for the song, directed by Mark Romanek, depicts Gray waking up in a hotel room, buying flowers, and traveling through New York City to meet a man in a park. At one point she is seen entering a Lexington Avenue subway entrance, which at the time served the 6, E, and F lines. The platform which her train arrives on, however, is the 63rd Street Connector which would indeed become the Lexington Avenue F line stop one year later.

At the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, the video won Best New Artist and was nominated for Best Female Video.

The Fugees - Killing Me Softly With His Song

Killing Me Softly with His Song is a song composed by Charles Fox and written by Norman Gimbel, which was a number-one hit in 1973 for Roberta Flack.
The song has been remade by numerous artists, most notably the Fugees whose rendition contributed to their Grammy Award-winning album, The Score.

Hip hop group the Fugees covered the song in 1995 on their album The Score, with Lauryn Hill singing the lead vocals. Their version, titled "Killing Me Softly," became a hit, reaching number two on the U.S. airplay chart, and had similar success in the United Kingdom, reaching number one, becoming 1996's best selling single in the country, and has since sold 1.36 million copies there. The version sampled the 1990 song "Bonita Applebum" by A Tribe Called Quest from their debut album People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. ATCQ themselves had sampled the riff from the song "Memory Band" found on the self-titled album of 1960s psychedelic soul Chicago band called Rotary Connection. The Fugees single was so successful that the track was 'deleted' and thus no longer supplied to retailers whilst the track was still in the Top 20 so that attention could be drawn to the next single, "Ready or Not." Propelled by the success of the Fugees track, the 1972 recording by Roberta Flack was remixed in 1996 with the vocalist adding some new vocal flourishes: this version topped the Hot Dance Club Play chart. In 2008, "Killing Me Softly With His Song" was ranked number 25 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop and #44 on its list of the "100 Greatest Songs of the '90s."

Disputed origins

Norman Gimbel came to California in the mid-1960s. He was introduced to the Argentinean-born composer Lalo Schifrin (then of Mission: Impossible fame) and began writing songs to a number of Schifrin's films. Both Gimbel and Schifrin made a suggestion to write a Broadway musical together, who Schifrin gave Gimbel an Argentinean novel to read as a possible idea. The book was never made into a musical, but in one of the chapters, the principal character describes himself as sitting alone in a bar drinking and listening to an American pianist 'killing me softly with his blues.' Gimbel put the idea in his 'idea' book for use at a future time with a parenthesis around the word 'blues' and substituted the word 'song' instead.

According to Lori Lieberman, the artist who performed the original recording in 1972, the song was born of a poem she wrote after experiencing a strong reaction to the song "Empty Chairs," written, composed, and recorded by Don McLean. She then related this information to Gimbel, who took her feelings and put them into words. Then, Gimbel passed the words on to Fox, who set them to music.

Fox himself, however, has specifically repudiated Lieberman's having input into the song's creation, saying: "We [ie. Gimbel and Fox] wrote the song and [Lieberman] heard it and said it reminded her of how she felt at [a Don McLean] concert. Don McLean didn't inspire Norman [Gimbel] or I to write the song but even Don McLean thinks he's the inspiration for the song according to his official website!"

The Four Seasons - Big girls don’t cry

Big Girls Don't Cry is a song written by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio and originally recorded by The Four Seasons. It hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 17, 1962, and, like its predecessor "Sherry", spent five weeks in the top position. The song also made it to number one, for three weeks, on Billboard's Rhythm and Blues survey.

According to Gaudio, he was dozing off while watching the John Payne/Rhonda Fleming/Ronald Reagan movie Tennessee's Partner (1955) when he heard Payne's character slap Fleming in the face. After the slap, Fleming's character replied, "Big girls don't cry." Gaudio wrote the line on a scrap of paper, fell asleep, and wrote the song the next morning.

However, the now-famous line does not appear in the Ronald Reagan film. According to Bob Crewe, he himself was dozing off in his Manhattan home with the television on when he awoke to see John Payne manhandling Rhonda Fleming in a 1956 film noir Slightly Scarlet. The line is heard in that film based on a James M. Cain story.

Like "Sherry", "Big Girls Don't Cry" is sung mostly in falsetto. With this song, the Four Seasons became the first rock-era act to hit the top spot on the Hot 100 with their first two chart entries (their first single, "Bermuda"/"Spanish Lace", did not appear on any Billboard chart in 1961).

The song has also appeard in the soundtrack to 1987's Dirty Dancing.

Cover versions

Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance sang this song on the first season episode of The Lucy Show entitled "Lucy Is A Chaperone."

On the children's television show 3-2-1 Contact, the song is reworded about Ostriches, Emus, and Sesame Street's character Big Bird, with the words changed to "Big Birds Don't Fly."

Edith Massey did a rare punk rock version of this song with her band, Edie and the Eggs; it is featured on The Rhino Brothers Present the World's Worst Records.

"Big Girls Don't Cry" was covered by Massachusetts girl group IQ in 2006.

Fleetwood Mac - Little lies

Little Lies is a song by the English/American rock band Fleetwood Mac. It was the third single to be taken from their 1987 album Tango in the Night. As of 2012, it is their final top 10 hit in the U.S.

The song was composed by the band's keyboard player and vocalist, Christine McVie and her then-husband Eddy Quintela. When released, the song reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. (#1 for four weeks on the American adult contemporary chart) and #5 on the UK Singles Chart.

The single was also available on the 12-inch format, featuring an extended dance version, a dub version, and the single's B-side, "Ricky", a non-album track penned by Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham. A limited 12-inch picture disc was also released in the UK, and it was also the first Fleetwood Mac single to be issued on the cassette-single format.

Dido - Life for rent

Life for Rent is the second studio album by the British singer-songwriter Dido, released by Arista Records on 29 September 2003. The album was produced by Rollo Armstrong and American songwriter Rick Nowels. Work on the album began in mid 2002.

It was certified 7× Platinum by the BPI; and sold over 12 millions copies worldwide, making it the fourth best selling album worldwide of 2003. The album became the seventh best-selling album of the 2000s on UK, making Dido the only singer to have two albums in the Top 10 list.

The single Life for rent was released on 1 December 2003, and was a relative success in the UK, peaking at #8 on the UK Singles Chart. The single also found success in Europe and America.

Bruce Dickinson - Tattooed Millionaire

Tattooed Millionaire is the first single from Bruce Dickinson's debut solo album, Tattooed Millionaire. It was released on 11 April 1990.

Paul Bruce Dickinson (born 7 August 1958) is an English musician, airline pilot, and broadcaster best known as the lead vocalist of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden.

Dickinson's interests include literature, writing, fencing (at which he has competed internationally, placing 7th in Great Britain, and has founded a fencing equipment company under the brand name "Duellist"), railway technology and aviation. Due to the wide variety of Dickinson's pursuits, Intelligent Life named him as a living example of a polymath in 2009.

Aviation

Dickinson learned to fly recreationally in Florida in the 1990s and now holds an airline transport pilot's licence. He regularly flew Boeing 757s in his role as captain for the now-defunct UK charter airline Astraeus, which, from 16 September 2010, employed him as Marketing Director.

One of his key roles in that position was to promote Astraeus' services by increasing their number of videos, leading to the UK Civil Aviation Authority releasing a video featuring Dickinson on aircraft loading safety in June 2011. Following Astraeus' closure on 21 November 2011, Dickinson branched into entrepreneurship when he launched Cardiff Aviation Ltd on 1 May 2012, an aircraft maintenance business based at the Twin Peaks Hangar in St Athan, Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales.

According to The Wall Street Journal, as of January 2013 Cardiff Aviation has created 40 jobs and hopes to have over a hundred personnel by the summer of 2013.

"Tattooed Millionaire" LP reached number 18 on the UK charts. According to the lyrics, the song is about American rock stars using each other, flaunting their wealth and excess, stabbing people in the back and failing to fulfil their obligations to others.

This song was inspired by then-Dickinson's wife cheating on him with Nikki Sixx.

Skid Row - I Remember You

I Remember You is the third and final single from Skid Row's 1989 eponymous debut album. The power ballad was released in November 1989 and written by bandmates Rachel Bolan and Dave "the Snake" Sabo. It reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and number twenty-three on the Mainstream Rock Tracks in early 1990.

The song also charted at #36 on the UK Singles chart.

In 2003, Skid Row, this time featuring new lead singer Johnny Solinger, recorded a second version of the song entitled "I Remember You Two." The song appears in the album Thickskin.

In a 2007 interview, vocalist Sebastian Bach commented, "'I Remember You' was the #1 prom song in the United States of America in the year 1990....You talk about making memories! Literally the whole country of America did their prom dance to 'I Remember You' one year, and that's a real heavy memory to beat."

"I Remember You" appeared on the ABC series October Road, FOX's Reunion, Comedy Central's South Park and NBC's Friday Night Lights.

In 2000, the punk rock band The Ataris covered the song for the compilation album Punk Goes Metal. The cover featured a few sampled bars of the original Skid Row version at the beginning and Sebastian Bach's high note at the climax of the song.

The song was covered on Californication at the end of the episode "The Recused" by fictional band Queens of Dogtown. This version also appears on the show's Season 4 soundtrack.

Whitesnake - Still of the night

Still of the Night (also known as "In the Still of the Night") is a song by Whitesnake.

It was released as the fourth single and third track from their hugely successful self titled 1987 album.

It reached #16 in the U.K., #18 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock Tracks and #79 on the Billboard Hot 100 when it was released on March 9, 1987. In 2009 it was named the 27th best hard rock song of all time by VH1.

The song was written by lead singer David Coverdale and guitarist John Sykes, and proved to be one of the band's most popular songs. It combines the blues origins of the band with the more distorted, harder sound driving the song, making for a powerful hard rock song. The current Whitesnake lineup and John Sykes both play the song as their live encore.

In 2009, in an interview with Metal Hammer, Coverdale commented on the origins of the song:

"When my mother died I was going through the stuff at her house and found some early demo cassettes. One of them was a song that Ritchie Blackmore and I had been working on which was the basic premise of what would become "Still of the Night". It was totally unrecognizable, so Ritchie doesn't have anything to worry about... neither do I! Ha ha ha! I took it as far as I could then I gave it to Sykesy when we were in the south of France, and he put the big guitar hero stuff on there. John hated blues so I had to work within those parameters. I manipulated to be electric blues, but how he performed it was fabulous for his time and relatively unique because of the songs. There were a lot of people doing that widdly stuff but they didn't have the quality of those songs."

The song has been cited as sounding similar to Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog", a possible source of inspiration for Coverdale and Sykes.

The cymbal and hi-hat work, as well as the distorted guitar noise and Coverdale's moans in the breakdown of the song have also been noted to bear a resemblance to "Whole Lotta Love," yet another comparison to Led Zeppelin.

A music video, featuring Coverdale's then future wife Tawny Kitaen, was shot for the song, and it was MTV's most requested video in its first week of release. The video lends additional credence to the Led Zeppelin influence, as Adrian Vandenberg is seen using a violin bow prop during the midsection of the song, reflecting Jimmy Page's use of the bow during live performances of "Dazed and Confused".

Whitesnake withheld licensing of "Still of the Night" for use in the video game Rock Revolution; a cover version of the song was subsequently featured in the game.

The Finnish symphonic metal singer Tarja Turunen covered the song for her album What Lies Beneath.

Carlos Santana - Smooth (feat. Rob Thomas)

Smooth is a collaboration between Latin rock band Santana and Rob Thomas of the rock group Matchbox Twenty.

The song was written by Thomas and Itaal Shur, sung by Thomas, produced by Matt Serletic and won three Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

"Smooth" was originally conceived by Shur as a song called "Room 17". The lyrics were stripped off and the track was given to Thomas, who re-wrote the lyrics and melody and re-titled it "Smooth", then recorded the song as a demo to play for Santana. This song was originally written to describe an acquaintance of Thomas', John Bizanes, who is... very 'smooth'. However, over time credit for this inspiration has been given to Thomas' wife, Marisol Maldonado. After hearing the song, Santana decided to have Thomas record the final version. Matt Serletic (who produced Matchbox Twenty's debut album Yourself or Someone Like You) produced the song and it was released from Santana's album Supernatural.

Thomas wrote "Smooth" for his wife, Marisol Maldonado. He stated in interviews that the lyric "My Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa" was inspired by the 1972 Elton John song "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters", which includes references to the 1961 Ben E. King song "Spanish Harlem".

"Smooth" became a massive hit in 1999, spending 12 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 beginning with the October 23, 1999 issue. It was the first chart-topping song in Carlos Santana's long-running career (his previous biggest hit being "Black Magic Woman", which peaked at number four in 1971). The song was the last number one hit of the 1990s and the final number one hit of the 20th century.

In the United Kingdom, "Smooth" initially underperformed in the UK Singles Chart, charting at number 75 in October 1999. After extra airplay and publicity it was re-issued in March 2000 and this time peaked at number 3, spending eight weeks in the top 40.

"Smooth" also spent a record-breaking ten consecutive weeks at the top of the VSpot Top 20 Countdown, a record that held up until the Dixie Chicks broke it in 2006.
